Oriol Puig

Journalist and researcher specialized in human mobility


Journalist trained at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (UAB), with a postgraduate degree in conflict communication and several Masters in Mediation, International Relations and Development Cooperation from the UAB, Ca’ Foscari from Venice and Paul Valery-Montpellier III. Doctor cum laude in social anthropology from the Universidad de Barcelona (UB) and international mention, with a thesis on trans-Saharan circular migrations between Niger and Libya.

Currently, he combines his academic career with journalism specialized in human mobility and acts as international correspondent for different media, including El País, Eldiario.es and Diari Ara, among others. With the project "Sahara, a desert in movement", he has obtained the Devreporter Scholarship, from which he continues to deepen the impact of European policies on externalization of borders in different countries of the Sahel.

He is the author of the book "The desert of the Sahara, beyond the Mediterranean crisis" (provisional title and pending publication), which analyzes the Sahara as a space of mobility. He is also a researcher in the African Society Study Group (GESA), the Group on Social Exclusion and Control (GRECS) and collaborates with the CER-Migracions (UB) and the Groupe de recherche Migration Espaces Sociétes (GERMES) of the Abdou University Moumouni of Niamey, Niger. He is also a member of the editorial board of the magazine Studia Africana, of the African Migration, Mobility and Displacement (AMMODI) research network and of the press platform for diversity in the media, Diverscat en Acción, of the Journalists Association of Catalonia .
