THE AFRICAN CITY: SLUMS AND SOLUTIONS FROM BELOW

Artivism

Workshop summary

Africa is the fastest urbanizing continent in the world. With more than half the urban population living in slums, African cities are associated more with challenges than opportunities. However, many popular initiatives emerge from slums to respond to a myriad of needs. This workshop will provide different analytical tools to understand contemporary African cities with a special emphasis on informal neighbourhoods; and will favour the development of innovative solutions to the current challenges faced by the cities of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Orientative structure:

1. History of cities in Africa (15 min)
2. Africa, planet of slums (30 min)
3. Governance of the African city (15 min)
4. Examples of urban habitability improvement (30 min)
5. Group exercise (30 min)
